Kayakoy: Turkey's Enchanting Ghost Village Near Fethiye

The Story Behind Kayakoy

Kayakoy - also known historically as Levissi - is one of the most hauntingly beautiful places in Turkey. Once a thriving Greek Orthodox village with a population of around 3,500, it was abandoned following the 1923 population exchange between Greece and Turkey. Today, the ruins of over 350 stone houses and two Byzantine churches stand as a deeply moving reminder of the village's past, preserved as an open-air museum.

🏚️ The Abandoned Stone Houses

Walking through the village's winding lanes and stepping inside the roofless stone houses gives a uniquely powerful glimpse into history. Many walls, doorframes, and decorative details remain remarkably intact - it feels as though time itself has stood still.

⛪ Taksiyarhis Church

The larger of the two churches, featuring beautifully preserved floor mosaics and fragments of wall frescoes. An essential stop on any Kayakoy visit. The building is structurally sound and open to enter.
